Dear World.
For the hundredth time: double space after a period is an antiquated style that has been rendered obsolete by modern typesetting tools (that is, any word processor developed post-DOS). The youngs, who never type more than one sentence ever, are of course exempt from needing to know this. What, you have a problem with having six pages of copy returned to you because you have to make it a party?
I just yesterday wrote a three paragraph long explanation about spaces after sentences and the history of publishing to an author who wanted to know why the typesetter had changed around all his spacing issues (When what I wanted to say was “TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A REAL PROFESSIONAL BOOK AND NOT SOMETHING YOU TYPED UP IN MS WORD, IDIOT!”).
His response?
Marcia,
Thank you for the detailed explanation.
Richard
